What is Hydroseeding?
Hydroseeding, or hydraulic mulch seeding, is a planting technique that involves spraying a slurry of seeds and mulch over prepared soil. It has become one of the most cost-effective methods for revegetation and is commonly used for erosion control on construction sites.
Thanks to the combination of fluids and fertilizers in the slurry, hydroseeding requires less water and is more resilient to harsh conditions like high winds and droughts. It is also less prone to washout compared to traditional broadcast sowing.
For areas with steep slopes or other erosion risks, we can add tackifying agents to ensure that the seed and soil remain in place. We also offer a variety of seed mixes tailored to different soil types and light conditions.
Our hydroseeding services can promote grass growth in as little as a week, providing a more affordable alternative to traditional sod installation.
Advanced Hydraulic Mulches
Fibramulch has proudly supplied the Hydroseeding industry with quality hydraulic mulches for over 40 years. Hydroseeding is the process of mixing and spraying a slurry comprised of hydraulic mulch, seed, fertilizer, water; and optionally bonding agents and soil amendments. Hydroseeding is a cost effective method of establishing vegetation. The hydraulic mulch holds the seed in place, insulates the seed from temperature fluctuations, and absorbs water which gives the seed a more continuous and consistent amount of moisture to enhance germination. Hydroseeding allows you to quickly and cost-effectively cover areas as small as residential lawns to areas as large as mine sites.
In Ontario, the optimal period for hydroseeding is late summer and early fall. This timeframe allows your lawn sufficient time to establish itself fully before the onset of winter, while also providing control over the watering process. However, it's advisable not to delay booking your hydroseeding appointment until then. Given the high demand for our services each season, we recommend calling well in advance to secure your appointment. This proactive approach ensures that you can take full advantage of the ideal hydroseeding window and benefit from a well-established and flourishing lawn.
The hydroseeding process, spanning from the initial soil test and lawn grading to the application of the hydroseed mixture, typically takes only a few days. Following application, you can expect to see the seeds beginning to sprout within 5–7 days. However, it will take a few additional weeks before your lawn reaches a sufficient length for mowing. This timeline underscores the efficiency of the hydroseeding method in quickly initiating the growth of a lush and well-established lawn on your property.
To optimize seed germination, in the weeks following the application, your hydroseeded lawn will need to stay consistently wet. Expect to water it up to three times a day for 5–15 minutes.
